Play is the primary form of communication for children. Through play, they tell us about their inner world long before they can express themselves using language. Through play, children can experiment, process, and acquire different skills and experiences. They shape their sense of who they are while learning to understand that other people may be different from them. Basic skills such as respecting, sharing, and cooperating can be developed through play. Play therapy, therefore, is a form of counseling for children that is based on this developmentally appropriate form of communication through play.
