Staycation: the how-to guide for families who spend summer vacation… at home!

Staycation; we love this fancy term for spending your time-off at home! Instead of expensive airline tickets and long queues at stations, we are choosing to stay at home with our little ones this summer. Yes, a vacation at home can be the perfect getaway for all families with young kids.

Don’t allow chores to take away the fun. One of the best things about going on holidays is leaving housework behind. Do you remember the money you’re saving by not going out of town? Put a little of it aside for some luxuries, starting with getting the house cleaned. A housekeeper can make sure that all the dishes will be done and the clothes will be washed.

*extra tip: Keep in mind that this is not the time to clean out the garage or declutter the closets – yes, you have free time at last, but such projects aren’t part of the staycation fun!

We all remember the good times we have spent with each other more than the places we have been to. You don’t have to travel somewhere off the beaten track to enjoy yourselves. Just make sure your staycation includes visits to cool amusement or water parks, zoos or aquariums near you. Bear in mind that keeping the kids entertained doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Museums and galleries are a good idea and they are often free, especially for children. Not only will you be saving money, you’ll be learning more about art and culture too. Win-win!

*extra tip: Make your house more vacation-friendly; sleeping outside in a tent or making a tent out of sheets and camping inside is a great way to create great memories for your kids. These are the exact stories they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

This can be difficult, but you should really try to avoid checking your email while you’re vacationing at home. Let your coworkers know that they should consider you unavailable, and keep your devices from taking over your staycation. On your staycation, work does not exist! In the same way, your little ones can’t spend their days in front of a screen; limit the use of TVs and tablets.

Vacations are usually memorable because you do something you haven’t done before. Maybe you’ve always yearned to learn Italian, or your children dream of being able to play the guitar. Well, you can find an Italian-speaking babysitter or a music teacher and start learning new things while having fun. Devote your staycation to learning new skills and all these activities will help you bond as a family.

While your vacation time is a great opportunity to bond as a family, it’s also time for you to relax. Yes, it’s OK to get a babysitter and hit the town with your significant other. As parents, we don’t pamper ourselves enough. Dancing the night away and taking some time to refresh and reboot your love life is priceless.

*extra tip: Is there a new restaurant or bar you want to try? A staycation is an amazing opportunity to splurge on something you wouldn’t normally spend your money on!

We’ve done it ourselves; our staycation days were really way more fun than we had expected! After all, when you’re stressed and tired, the last thing you want to do is worry about flights and delays. What you really need is to relax with the people you love more than anything else…
